"rock & roll isn't even music really. It's a mistreating of instruments to get feelings over." ~Mark E. Smith
THE GATORVERSE
The Gatorverse is a long-term, multi-platform project that merges sculpture, video, installation, and broadcasting to explore the themes of environmental collapse and the consequences of consumerism. It is a speculative world where a dystopian future, born from human consumption, has led to a new evolutionary path: the fusion of machine and reptile.- GATORVERSE NEWSREELS
(COMING SOON)- THE GATORVERSE DRIVE-IN (WIP)
"The Gaterverse Drive-in” reimagines 50 years of people's history through rock n' roll, broadcast as immersive radio shows from Doris, a custom '68 Cadillac. Visitors tune in via low-power FM, using portable radios, car stereos, or mobile phones. These two-hour performances fuse live vinyl DJing, storytelling, and speculative documentaries, blending pivotal shifts in our cultural history with "The Gatorverse"—a dystopian parallel universe where rock n' roll is gospel and giant alligators are mobile villages. This project creates a unique, transportive experience, exploring history and myth through an unconventional format.
Doris, the mobile FM transmitter, serves as the project's centerpiece. Built on a '68 Cadillac chassis, she houses the necessary equipment for a drive-in radio show: FM transmitter, 8mm film projector, sound system, and movie screen. The speculative documentaries employ archival video, news footage, rock n' roll documentaries, and 3D animations of the "Gatorverse," generated using video game software, stop-motion, and classic animation techniques.
The drive-in format is crucial. Inspired by Hakim Bey's "Temporary Autonomous Zone," it represents a disappearing cultural space symbolizing freedom, escapism, and autonomy. The journey to the encounter mirrors the "Gatorverse" culture, where giant alligators function as mobile sanctuaries. This project aims to create a liminal space where history, fiction, and community converge, using the nostalgic drive-in as a platform for radical storytelling and social commentary.
